What is a sample pack, preset pack, loop pack, etc.?

Sample packs are collections of audio files set to a particular theme. For example a Moog DFAM sample pack would contain many unique audio files containing recordings of the Moog DFAM (its a drum synth hardware module). Someone would purchase such a sample pack because they want to import those audio files into their DAW - purchasing the DFAM sample pack effectively gives them several unique full DFAM drum kits without needing to purchase a $600 DFAM.

Preset packs contain presets for some type of VST or plugin inside a DAW set to a particular theme. An Ambient Pad Preset Pack for Serum would contain many preset files that the user loads into their Serum library. This gives the customer access to new presets inside of Serum for the particular style or theme of music they are going for. There are many reasons people purchase these preset packs, here are the top 3:

1. They help inspire new sounds and new song ideas

2. They help teach how one would go about achieving a certain sound in that software

3. They give the customer instant access to a certain sound with minimal effort

Loop packs contain audio loops or song segments set to a particular theme. For example an Egyptian Industrial Music Sample and Loop pack may contain dozens of different audio loops and song segments that the customer can import into their DAW to use for any purpose. There are several ways that someone might use audio loops:

1. They could arrange the loops from the pack in any order/combination to create a new song

2. They could mix the loops with new audio recorded by the customer

3. A vocalist could use the loops to create material to perform over if they do not play any instruments.

In general sample packs, loop packs, and preset packs are typically intertwined. It is very common to see a 'Sample Pack' available that contains 30 samples, 20 loops, and 15 presets. Make sure you check that the sample pack your buying contains presets for the correct software, and make sure that there isn't another option available to potentially only buy the part you're interested in.
