  • What is Genera Studios?
Genera Studios is a umbrella brand for all of Andrew Southworth's projects. Originally a name for Andrew's home studio back in 2009, eventually Genera Studios became the name listed under 'Record Label' when all new music was being released to distribution companies in 2018. Genera Studios is part record label, part recording studio, part music asset distributor, and part music education company.
  • Amazon affiliate links?
We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites. All Amazon links provided on this website, mostly through blogs, are part of the Amazon Affiliate program. If you purchase anything on Amazon through these links then we will recieve a commission for referring you to the product. There is no added cost to you for using these links, it is simply Amazon giving us a cut off the profit for helping generate that sale. We only recommend products that we either have direct experience with, have purchased ourselves, or have a good reputation. We will try to always be as up front as possible about our use of the direct product linked. All the products we list are products we would promote without the affiliate program, but the affiliate program just gives us an incentive to actually give you a direct link to Amazon's store page for that product. We personally use Amazon for most purchases when possible as they typically have the best prices (or equal prices), and we get to take advantage of Prime shipping.
  • What is a sample pack, preset, loop, etc?"
Sample packs are collections of audio files set to a particular theme. For example a Moog DFAM sample pack would contain many unique audio files containing recordings of the Moog DFAM (its a drum synth hardware module). Someone would purchase such a sample pack because they want to import those audio files into their DAW - purchasing the DFAM sample pack effectively gives them several unique full DFAM drum kits without needing to purchase a $600 DFAM. Preset packs contain presets for some type of VST or plugin inside a DAW set to a particular theme. An Ambient Pad Preset Pack for Serum would contain many preset files that the user loads into their Serum library. This gives the customer access to new presets inside of Serum for the particular style or theme of music they are going for. There are many reasons people purchase these preset packs, here are the top 3: 1. They help inspire new sounds and new song ideas 2. They help teach how one would go about achieving a certain sound in that software 3. They give the customer instant access to a certain sound with minimal effort Loop packs contain audio loops or song segments set to a particular theme. For example an Egyptian Industrial Music Sample and Loop pack may contain dozens of different audio loops and song segments that the customer can import into their DAW to use for any purpose. There are several ways that someone might use audio loops: 1. They could arrange the loops from the pack in any order/combination to create a new song 2. They could mix the loops with new audio recorded by the customer 3. A vocalist could use the loops to create material to perform over if they do not play any isntruments In general sample packs, loop packs, and preset packs are typically intertwined. It is very common to see a 'Sample Pack' available that contains 30 samples, 20 loops, and 15 presets. Make sure you check that the sample pack your buying contains presets for the correct software, and make sure that there isn't another option available to potentially only buy the part you're interested in.
  • I have a question about vocal techniques, help! "
I feel your pain. Years ago I struggled to find the questions I needed answers and there wasn't quite the online presence for vocals back then as there is now. The Andrew Southworth YouTube channel has its roots in screaming and singing lessons, and I plan to support as many questions as possible to help the current beginning singing generation become masters at their craft. Here are a few ways you can ask for help: 1. Comment on the YouTube video with your question and i'll try my best to help. Often other vocalists will try to help in the comments. 2. Record a video or audio file, upload it somewhere online, and send it to me on Twitter (@southwortha), the contact page, or the contact email listed on this site (AndrewRSouthworth@gmail.com). For the fastest help with a video or audio file I would advise going through Twitter as I check that more frequently than my emails. It also gives me the opportunity to answer the question publically which can help other vocalists. By default if you email me with your video or audio file I will assume you have no problem with me answering your question in a future video, and I may share that video/audio file in the video for educational purposes. If you do not want this, just let me know and I won't share it! 3. If the question you have is related to a Blog post on this site, post the comment on the blog post asking for help. This also allows me to reply in a way that will help as many people as possible. This is not my day job, so I only have so much time I can spend answering questions (or making videos, updating the website, etc). So I will do my best, but please be respectful of my free time as I don't get much after working full time.
